The Linty Blankie

When Joel was born, my mother came to meet him at the hospital and gave him the most beautiful, hand made blanket. It didn't take long for this blanket to become his lovey. Like Linus from the Peanut Gallery, he has carried it with him for the past 3 years. He brings it everywhere; in the car on long trips, to my parents' house when we visit, in the double stroller when on walks, and he sleeps with it wrapped around him.

He calls it his 'white linty blankie', to distinguish it from the similar green blankie someone else made when he was born that he doesn't like as much. Although it's looking more grey than white now. I asked him why he calls it the 'linty blankie' and he said it's because it's full of lint! He likes to sit and pick at the lint, so much so that the blankie is now referred to simply as Lint. The blankie has also been personified, as in 'I can't find Lint! Where's Lint! I want Lint!' The other day, Lint was sleeping in a box, which I happened to move, and accidentally woke him up. Bad mommy!

I've heard stories of children keeping their blankies until adulthood, and even one story of someone who kept a little piece of their blankie in their wallet. I love that Joel has a blankie, and that it happens to me the one my mom made for him. When he is upset, it is the one thing he wants that will calm him down. Forget Mommy, when he's hurt or upset all this boy needs is a cuddle with Lint and he's good to go.

Just a few weeks old.

March 2008- went through a phase where he would hook the blankie in his bottom teeth.

It's super sweet that his lovey is something your mom made him. And great that you have so many pictures of him with it.

Oh those photos are so cute. None of my boys (so far) have had anything like that. I wonder if D2 will?

we have a blankie as well. when the jellybean first began to talk he called it biddy. which i loved. but now it's just blankie. he will come home from daycare, run over to it, give it a big hug and say "i missed you blankie!" blankie has also been personafied and is refered to as him. "where's blankie?" "i don't know. let's go find him." i love that he has something that helps soothe him.
